Thanks to all who attended our first meeting on April 1! It's a very diverse and talented group. We had 14 attendees.
People With Disabilities Radio Organizational Meeting
April is Public Radio Recognition Month!
The first organizational meeting for PWD (people with disabilities) Powered Radio was held on Tuesday, April 1 from 1-3 pm in the Conference Room of the studios of KUNMfm. We hope to meet once a month, thereafter.
PWD Powered Radio is a cooperative of people with disabilities or those who care about us. We are interested in producing radio and podcast news stories by, for and about people with disabilities. No experience with radio, sound editing or news writing is required. Training will be provided. Our greatest needs are commitment and people with all sorts of talents, not just radio production. The only limit is imagination. Given the new, digital technologies, almost anybody can produce radio, as long as they have a computer, software, a recorder and a microphone. I produce most of my stories in my home, in my pajamas, at my own schedule. This meeting is an opportunity to meet each other, learn each other's interests and commitment, discuss the possibilities for "satellite" production facilities off-campus, discuss story ideas, discuss free audio editing software for computers and brainstorm fundraising for equipment and supplies.
If you have equipment, software, etc., we want to know! Feel free to bring along samples of your: writing, recordings, etc. and also any assistive technologies or assistants you require.
If you cannot attend but are interested in participating, please contact me. We will try to make all materials available to you.
KUNMfm is listener supported and volunteer programmed, serving Central and Northern New Mexico on the air and the whole world on the 'net. Their website is: http://kunm.org/
KUNMfm's fundraiser will take place April 5 -11. If you’d like to help answer phones and take pledges, contact Rachel Kaub, the Operations Manager. You can email her operations at kunm dot org or phone: two seven seven - four five one six for details about becoming a KUNM volunteer, or to ask about attending the next General Orientation on Sunday, July 13, 2008, from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Participation in the fundraiser is not a requirement for participation in PWD Powered Radio activities, but it sure wouldn't make us look bad, either.
The General Orientation is an introduction for anyone interested in volunteering at KUNM. Once you have been selected for particular duties at KUNM, we will provide any training required for you to succeed in your new position. Training classes will be held for six Saturdays, beginning July 19, from 4 - 5:30 pm. You MUST make arrangements with Rachel for these.
KUNM is located on the 3rd floor of Onate Hall on the UNM Camups, at the southwest corner of Girard and Campus. Doors on the southwest side of the building are accessible and there is a ramp.
The elevator to the third floor is located in the southeast corner of the building.
The Conference Room is located at the southeast corner of the third floor. People with "handicapped" placards can park for free in the lot. All others must find parking on the streets in the surrounding neighborhood. It's best to come early; parking is at a premium.
Refreshments weren't provided, this time, but we'll have better luck in the future.
